Speech Pathologists

About

Taken from Speech Pathology Australia, “Speech pathologists study, diagnose and treat communication disorders, including difficulties with speaking, listening, understanding language, reading, writing, social skills, stuttering and using voice. They work with people who have difficulty communicating because of developmental delays, stroke, brain injuries, learning disability, intellectual disability, cerebral palsy, dementia and hearing loss, as well as other problems that can affect speech and language. People who experience difficulties swallowing food and drink safely can also be helped by a speech pathologist.”

Speech Pathologists must complete a 4 year undergraduate degree at a recognised university to work under this title. Speech Pathologists employed at Stepping Stones also require to be registered members of Speech Pathology Australia (which ensures that they uphold their code of ethics and demonstrate continued learning in the area), and be approved to work according to Medicare and Private Health standards. Finally, all staff are required to obtain Criminal History clearances and Working with Children checks.
